Civil War Days at Fort Duffield
-- Union and Confederate reenactors bring to life the history of Union Fort Duffield and the life of the Civil War soldier. Entertaining and educational for the whole family --

Fort Duffield was the "Union Stronghold At The Mouth of Salt River". It is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Civil War Preservation Trust's Civil War Discovery Trail. The fort can be reached using the hiking trail at the end of the parking lot. Walking tour brochures and rest rooms are available at the fort.

In September 1861, President Abraham Lincoln said, "I think to lose Kentucky is nearly the same as to lose the whole game." Ordered built by General William Tecumseh Sherman in 1861 to protect a Union supply route in West Point and to protect the City of Louisville from attack via the Louisville-Nashville Turnpike and Ohio River, Fort Duffield is Kentucky's oldest, largest and best-preserved earthen fortification. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and on the Civil War Trust's Civil War Discovery Trail. Wheelchair accessible, the Fort allows visitors to explore a site where Union Soldiers defended the Ohio River against the Confederate Army. Although no battles took place at Fort Duffield, there are more than 30 Union soldiers buried at the small cemetery located adjacent to the fort.

The Fort is staffed by volunteers, and reenactments occur on Memorial Day Weekend.

Fort Duffield and Fort Duffield Park offers:
  • Living History Programs
  • 10 Miles of Nationally Acclaimed Mountain Bike and Hiking Trails
  • Picnic Facilities
  • School and Group Tours Available

Some 300 feet above the city, this impregnable fortress was never challenged. However, its strategic position no doubt played an important roll in the Civil War in Kentucky. On your visit to Fort Duffield you will experience a panoramic view of historic West Point looking across the beautiful Ohio River to the scenic hills of Southern Indiana.

Visit the serene gardens of Fort Duffield's Memorial Hill Cemetery which pays tribute to the 61 soldiers who died building the fort. Set your own pace with the self-guided walking tour brochure. Witness the ongoing restoration of one of Kentucky's nearly forgotten Civil War treasurers.
